There is no easy answer to a question like this. A W126 can come with harder to maintain 5 liter V8 or the same 3 liter engine available for a W124.

W140 is much higher end model, it is bigger, more comfortable and has more gadgets. W124 less complicated, has less gadgets, but it is very reliable and practical. W140 is more parade and weekends car, while W124 is more practical for daily use. For daily use I would go for W210 - before face lift, E320 with inline six engine.
